Schroth-based Scoliosis & Kyphosis Physical Therapy

Scoliosis is a complex, three-dimensional condition involving both curvature and rotation of the spine. It cannot be corrected by simply side-bending or “straightening” the spine. The rotational component affects overall alignment, breathing mechanics, and movement patterns. Addressing this rotation is essential to restore balance and function.

Schroth-based scoliosis therapy uses Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) to target postural asymmetry, muscle imbalances, pain, and limited rib cage and diaphragm mobility. The goal of PSSE is to minimize curve progression and promote improved posture, strength, and body awareness.

Both adolescents and adults with idiopathic scoliosis or kyphosis can benefit from this approach. PSSE is often introduced around ages 10–12, though younger children may also be appropriate based on engagement and readiness. For adults, Schroth-based therapy can be highly effective in reducing pain, improving posture, and supporting long-term spinal mobility and alignment.

PSSE is one part of a multidisciplinary scoliosis management plan and does not replace bracing or surgery when indicated. Education is also an essential component of care. At Peak Balance Physical Therapy, we aim to empower patients and families through knowledge, helping them take an active, informed role in managing scoliosis confidently.
