Schroth-based Scoliosis Therapy
Scoliosis is a complex 3-Dimentional condition involving rotation and curvature of the spine. You cannot just side-bend a person out of their scoliosis. The rotation of the spine needs to be addressed as it translates into every aspect of their body's alignment and ignoring it can have a detrimental effect.
Schroth-based scoliosis therapy utilizes Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) to address postural asymmetry, muscle imbalances, pain, and rib cage-diaphragm mobility. The goal of PSSE is to minimize curve progression and maximize postural balance.
Those who can benefit from the use of PSSE are adults and adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis or Kyphosis.
Typically, PSSE can be started with children around 10-12 years old, however, some younger patients may be appropriate based on their interest and participation in therapy sessions and home exercises.
PSSE is one of many tools in the multidisciplinary management of scoliosis, not a replacement for bracing or surgery, if necessary.
One of the most important parts of scoliosis therapy is educating the patient and their family about the management of their condition. Knowledge is power, and our goal is to empower all of our patients to ensure they have the opportunity to make educated decisions about their care.
